Muskogee County Genealogical Society will celebrate its 30th birthday this month.
The society began in 1983, publishing the first quarterly in September of that year.
From the beginning, the meetings were held monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Muskogee Public Library.
Indexes were produced for these quarterlies which make research so much easier. Each issue contained many kinds of records including pedigree charts, marriages from church records, from courthouse records, censuses, cemetery listings, and much more.
Glancing through some of these issues, which are available at the Genealogy Department of Muskogee Public Library, one can see many accomplishments of these active genealogy researchers.
Membership was open to anyone interested in the genealogy and history of Muskogee County Oklahoma.
The society has donated books, microfilm and other materials to the Grant Foreman Collection of the library.
Over the years, this collection has grown and has become known as one of the best research collections in the state.
From the first, the librarians of Muskogee Public Library have played a big role in the success of this collection.
The society assists researchers in finding the answers to their genealogical and local history queries, by mail and e-mail
The society has a website that supplies many resources such as indexes that open the vast amount of records available to all who seek answers.
For many years, the society has held workshops and special programs at the Muskogee Public Library to give genealogists the opportunity to educate themselves on research methods, find new sources that become available and socialize with other researchers who may share tips that could lead to breaking down brick walls.
The partnership with the library has benefitted the local researcher by providing a fantastic collection of materials that covers our very colorful local history. The Genealogy/Local History Department receives queries from every corner of the United States. Our “Indian Territory” history catches the curiosity and imagination of people from all over the country. Whether its in-laws or outlaws, our mail flows with questions about family and historical characters.
So save the date and come celebrate Muskogee County Genealogical Society's 30th Birthday from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 28, in the Grant Foreman Room at Muskogee Public Library!
