Celebrate Aviation Week at library

Monday is Orville Wright's birthday. It also is when we celebrate National Aviation Week.

For those of you who often find your mind in the clouds, the Muskogee Public Library has several books about the history of flight and the early pioneers of aviation history.

“How We Invented the Airplane: an Illustrated History” by Orville Wright tells how two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio, achieved the dream of flight on Dec. 17, 1903.

It is filled with photographs from that era.

James Tobin in his book “To Conquer the Air” tells about the Wright Brothers and the rivals they had in the race for flight. Not everyone believed the report of the flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903. It took much perseverance for the Wright brothers to gain the recognition they deserved.

Another book about the Wright brothers is “The Bishop's Boys: a Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright” by Tom Crouch. It includes family drama with the history of aviation.

In addition to books on Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Library also has books on famous aviators. These include books about Amelia Earhart, Eddie Rickenbacker and Charles Lindbergh to name but a few.

Von Hardesty in his book “Black Wings” tells of the courageous stories of African Americans in aviation and space history.

Hardesty tells of the prejudices African Americans faced in the aviation field, how they overcame and the role they have played in aviation history.

These are but a few of the many books available at the Muskogee Public Library that tells of the history of flight and the men and women who made it what it is today.

So keep your feet on the ground but your head in the clouds or beyond and visit the Muskogee Public Library for these books and more.
