Annual car show pays off for Shriners

Keith Olmstead said he was excited for the 10th annual Bedouin Shrine Clowns Car and Collectors Show.

“We have 32 classes of cars and a motorcycle class,” he said. “My prediction is that we’ll have about 150 cars and bikes show up this year. That’s just a guess, but with pre-registration and the weather cooperating, it’s possible.”

The show, which will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at Honor Heights Park, helps raise money for the Shriner Clowns.

Olmstead said the idea started small and snowballed from there.

“We had a few members who were in car clubs, and they thought it would be a good fundraiser,” he said. “It’s been a roller coaster ride, but it’s been on the upswing the last few years. The quality of cars has entered has gotten better, and we moved it to Honor Heights last year, which everyone loved.”

Registration for the show is $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the show. Registration that day will be open from 8 a.m. to noon.

In previous years, the show has raised several thousand dollars, and Olmstead said that helped out a lot.

“That’s a good chunk of money to help transport kids,” he said. “It also benefits the city of Muskogee because it brings in out-of-town business. I’ve spoken with at least four guys who are bringing cars from Texas.”

Olmstead also said the event is “family friendly.”

“There’s no alcohol allowed and there will be concessions available,” he said. “We’d like to encourage everyone to bring their kids out and come look at some nice cars. The event is free, so there is no cost to come check it out.”

Awards range from Best in Show to Participants’ Choice, and there will be dashboard plaques and goodie bags for the first 100 entries. There will also be door prizes and cash drawings.

Olmstead said the event wouldn’t be possible without a coordinated effort.

“We’d like to thank everyone in Muskogee for supporting us,” he said. “We hope they will continue to support us in future shows. We’d also like to thank the city for the use of the park this weekend.”
