Music festival’s founders have high hopes

Oklahoma artists Jason Boland & The Stragglers and the Turnpike Troubadours have started a three-day music festival set beside the Illinois River.

Medicine Stone, named after the Osage name for the river, continues today and Saturday at the Diamondhead Resort in Tahlequah.

The founders say they hope this will become the premier outdoor music event in the four-state area, according to a media release. It combines music, food, camping, canoeing, rafting and floating.

Medicine Stone will have a nearly all-Oklahoma music lineup, including Todd Snider, Stoney LaRue, Cody Canada & The Departed, Grammy-nominated John Fullbright, the Red Dirt Rangers, Randy Crouch and Jason Eady.

“This is something Oklahomans have long been waiting for,” Boland said in the release. “We have had the honor of playing the Larry Joe Taylor music festival over the years and we wanted to create a similar atmosphere for the music fans closer to home.

“The people in this region don’t ever get this kind of event and the Diamondhead Resort is the perfect place for what we have in mind.”

Boland, an Oklahoma native, has released eight albums. His latest, “Dark & Dirty Mile,” peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard top country albums chart. The band plays Red Dirt/Texas country music.

Boland’s longtime friend Evan Felker, also an Oklahoma native, said the outdoor concert was a long time coming.

“This has been in the back of our minds for a long time,” said Felker, who fronts the country rock band Turnpike Troubadours. “We are excited to create this event for our friends in Tahlequah and have the chance to stay home and see all our friends. This part of the river, it’s the most beautiful land in Oklahoma.”
