TAHLEQUAH — Nationally famous angler Jimmy Houston will deliver the Battenfield-Carletti Distinguished Entrepreneur Lecture at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of the W. Roger Webb Educational Technology Center at Northeastern State University.
The lecture concludes with a question and answer session at noon. The lecture and Q&A are free and open to the public.
Houston, often called “America’s Favorite Fisherman,” gained national acclaim through his national television show “Jimmy Houston Outdoors” on NBC Sports Outdoors. However, his hall of fame fishing career began when he was attending Northeastern.
Since winning the Oklahoma State Championship as a Northeastern senior in 1966, Houston has posted winnings of more than $1 million in bass tournaments. He has fished 15 BASSMaster Classics and won the B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year title in 1976 and 1986. He currently fishes the FLW Series.
Houston’s TV show “Jimmy Houston’s Adventures” has appeared on several broadcast networks and “Jimmy Houston Outdoors” was consistently the most viewed outdoors show on ESPN for 20 years. It now appears on NBC Sports Outdoors and other networks.
The legendary angler was inducted in to the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Professional Bass Fishing Hall of Fame in 2002. Houston was inducted into the IGFA Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame in 2008. He was named King of Sports for Fishing in 1989. In June 2004, the Jim Thorpe Association recognized Houston as the Jim Thorpe Man of the Year.
Houston has written five books including “Caught Me a Big’un” which was a best selling fishing book. “Hooked for Life” and “The Reel Line” are spiritual and inspirational collections taken from fishing situations. His latest book, “Catch of the Day,” is a daily devotional built around fishing tips, tales and events.
Established in 2002 through the NSU Foundation by Dr. Harold Battenfield and Dr. John Carletti, the Battenfield-Carletti Distinguished Entrepreneur Lecture Series invites NSU alumni to campus to share their entrepreneurial experiences with students.
