The Descendants of Freedmen Association

The Descendants of Freedmen Association and their supporters will host their next meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rudisill Library, 1520 N. Hartford in Tulsa. The meeting is free and open to the general public.

The Descendants of Freedmen, descendants of freed slaves of Indian tribes or mixed African Indians fight race based tribal disenrollments and other discrimination practiced by the Five “civilized tribes” which signed 1866 treaty agreements with the US government granting citizenship to the freedmen and their descendants.

Meeting attendants will hear of the latest events ongoing in Washington DC and in Oklahoma which affect the rights of the freedmen people.

Attorney Hannibal Johnson of Tulsa will have available his newest book “Apartheid in Indian Country,” which discusses disenrollments of freedmen tribal members available at the meeting.

Green Country Duplicate Bridge    

Green Country Duplicate bridge meets at 12:30 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Kiwanis Senior Citizens Center, 119 Spaulding Blvd. Newcomers are welcome. If interested in playing or learning to play duplicate bridge contact Ann Kent at (918) 682-3098, Mary Smith at (918) 682-2605, or Sandy Cole at (918) 684-9002.

Recent winners are:

• Nov. 14 — Renee Tyrrell and Bill Porter, first; Mary Beyers and Minnie Sheffield, second; and Joann Webb and Margie Ray, third.

• Nov. 16 — Jane Lopes and Betty Jordan, first; Becky Powers and Pamela Coonce, second; and Werner Wagner and Santa McWilliams, third.

• Nov. 19 — Ruth Sharpe and Betty Jordan, first; Fran Martin and Ralph Parker, second; and Mary Smith and Bonnie Jennings tied with Werner Wagner and Joyce Shaffer for third.

 The following club members recently participated in a tournament at Oklahoma City and earned silver points by winning two rounds: Ann Kent, Norma Kolmer, Dave Murdock and Linda Stearns.
