Chamber Notes: Get geared up for golf at Saturday tournament

By Gary Perkins

I hope everyone has been out practicing their golf swing, in preparation for next weekend’s golf tournament at Pecan Valley Golf Course.

As a fundraiser, the chamber needs a big turnout … plus, it promises to be a lot of fun for those involved. The format will be a four-person scramble, at a cost of $50 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, a T-shirt and lunch, plus, the possibility of winning a large cash prize.

In addition, we will have some door prizes, along with “closest to the hole” and “longest drive” awards.

Along with this, I am still in need of some door prizes, so if any of you have something you would like to donate, please give me a call.

We enjoyed a nice turnout for the weekly chamber luncheon at The Courtyard Bistro on Thursday. In attendance were: Mike and Bette Bradley, Chris Young, Steve Clinkenbeard, Dowe Boulter, Debbie Cooper, Liz McMahan, Paula Foster and myself.

Paula told us that the Old Fort Women’s Club, has accepted our invitation to participate in the weekly “Neighborhood Pride” project that the chamber is embracing between Memorial Day and Labor Day. With the help of Old Fort Women’s Club, we will pick one residence each week and recognize them as one that goes beyond the normal in showing neighborhood pride. This can be by yard maintenance, landscaping, house improvements or whatever it takes to stand out and shine.

This can be any residence within the boundary of our town, basically from Oklahoma 10, to 2 Mile Road, to Pecan Valley Golf Course, to the Cherokee Casino. If someone lives outside those rough boundaries and feel they are deserving of recognition, please give me a call and we will see that you get included.

We will recognize the weekly winner in this article, by placing a “Neighborhood Pride” sign in the yard, and hopefully, by a picture in the newspaper. It is planned to just be a little something to spur citizens into taking a bit more pride in our community, by cleaning up, sprucing up, or whatever it takes to improve their surroundings.

We appreciate everyone’s support in this project. With the number of storms and rain we have had over the past several months, we all have limbs, tall grass, clutter, etc. in our yards that can be cleaned up. We all know that it is an on-going process for most of us.

Make sure you get the Car Show on your calendar … June 13 and 14. Entries are only $20 this year and each entry will have the chance to win $1,000 cash.

Car show T-shirts are now available for sale at $10 each. Let me know your size, and we will have one ready for you to pick up here at the chamber, Scotts Pharmacy or SonBurst Graphics.

New this year will be the “Keith Hardware Kruise” on Friday afternoon, with three entries winning $100 each, as random picks. Also new is the “Loud Pipe Contest”, following the Kruise, with a special trophy awarded to the loudest contestant.

And finally on Friday evening is the ever-popular “Burnout Contest”, alongside the Phillip 66 station, off Lee Street and U.S. 62. Anyone can enter any or all of these Friday evening events for only $10 (for one event, two events, or all three), and that includes a T-shirt.

Additional T-shirts will be available for sale to the public, as well. Anyway, it will be a fun-filled two days for the entire family.

A special “thank you” to the Car Show Committee, for all their work in putting this major event for our town, together. They include: Bobby Harris, Jerry Harris, David Morgan, Dustin Morgan, Scott and Sandy Atkinson and my wife, Kathy. More hours than you realize, are put into making this annual event a success. Don’t miss it.
