Mr. Crappie: Paddlefish must be tagged, cyber bug eats column

The cyber bug has struck again. It seems last week's article is somewhere in the cyber world called Internet. Someone, somewhere in cyberland is scratching their head wondering how they got a fishing report from Fort Gibson, Okla.

This could be like those stories you hear about when letters were received 20 to 30 years after they were originally mailed. All I know is that Mr. Crappie's article is somewhere in cyberland.

The area lakes are almost back to normal. At writing, Fort Gibson was near the 3-foot elevation. All the gates have been closed. The turbines are running 24/7, making for some great fishing.

Since the closing of the gates the paddlefish have moved in front of the turbines. The snaggers have had a snagging of a time with the spoonbills. Mr. Game Ranger has had a field day writing tickets to those snaggers who do not obey the law. Remember, a paddlefish permit is required to snag spoonbill. The barbs must be bent down or ground off. There is NO giving away your paddlefish and continuing snagging for spoonbill. When keeping a spoonbill, one has to put their name and the paddlefish permit number on the fish. This document must stay with the fish until you take it home. Obey the laws and you will not fear for a hefty fine from the game ranger.

Floyd Waters won the 2009 Mr. Crappie's Biggest Crappie Contest. Floyd brought in a 2-pound 2-ounce crappie for the contest. Eleven-year old Cody Fielder won the 12 and under Crappie Contest. All the contestants will receive a prize for their entries. Congratulations to the winners. We are planning the 2009 Biggest Catfish Contest. Stay tuned to this paper for breaking news ...

Anglers have been using roostertails, silver spoons, and spinner lures to catch sandbass on the west side of Fort Gibson Dam. Other anglers have used small to medium minnows to catch crappie and sandbass on the eastside of the dam. It has been reported the stripers have made their way to the dam. Large streamer jigs, large plastic sassy shad, or topwater lures are great lures for catching stripers.

The catfishermen have had a slow time catching catfish in front of the turbines. As summer gets near, so will better catfishing.

Now is the time to take the kids fishing. The best memories of fishing was spent with family. Take the kids and create memories that will last a lifetime. I have great memories spent with my dad, grandfather, and family. I could write a book on my childhood fishing trips and the memories. Who knows, you may take a fish out for dinner.

Please be safe when children are a part of water activities. Carry floatation devices in case of an emergency

Have a cell phone handy and make sure you have phone service in case you had to use it.

Til next time good luck and good fishing …
