Corn Festival gets started this weekend

By Liz McMahan
Times Staff Writer

What began as a fundraising idea to benefit the proposed Fort Gibson Sports and Recreation Complex has turned into a two-day festival celebrating one of the area’s tastiest crops.

Fort Gibson has long been known throughout the area for its enormous annual sweet corn crop, said Myra Cookson, festival chairman.

Many of the town’s residents have worked in the corn harvest each summer.

This year’s crop is expected to be an especially good one, and there should be plenty of corn and corn products for sale at the festival, said Debby Daniels, a festival committee member.

There are nearly 50 vendors signed up for Saturday, with many of them being food vendors, Daniels said. They will be serving up everything from kettle corn and turkey legs to Indian tacos and Polish sausages, Daniels said. They also will offer the traditional summer favorites like snow cones.

In addition, the local FFA group will be selling its Blue and Gold sausage and other meats and conducting a cow patty bingo game, Daniels said.

Cookbooks containing hundreds of recipes for using corn will be for sale for $5 each at the festival, she said.
