Published August 19, 2008 02:11 pm - Back in the classroom again School year kicks off at Fort Gibson By Cathy Spaulding Times Staff Writer Fort Gibson students returned to class by the hundreds Thursday, the first day of the 2009 school year. Fort Gibson School Superintendent Derald Glover said enrollment figures as of Friday were 1,863, which is up slightly from the end of the 2008 school year, but down from the first of the last school year. He said school population has been holding pretty steady. “It always changes over the first few days of the school year,” Glover said. “We anticipate more people.” Fort Gibson High School students saw eight new teachers when they returned to class Thursday. They are: • Kevin Engle, history. • Amber Lobaugh, art. • Melanie Wicks, drama. • Todd Phillips, science. • Gabriella Vieth, math. • Jay Parker, agriculture. • Jenny Krepps, choir. • Cleon McClain, astronomy. Roger King is the new high school vice principal, and Kelly Hughes is a new secretary. Parker and Krepps also will teach at Fort Gibson Middle School. Shirley Flaska will teach a half-day of vocal music at the middle school and a half-day at the intermediate elementary. Another new teacher is Kim Morgan, who teaches sixth-grade math, said Principal Greg Phares.
