Published August 26, 2008 03:46 pm - 5K run is family event for many By Wendy Burton Times Correspondent The first and third place winners of Saturday’s one-mile fun run have picked up the running “bug” from their father. Tom Peterson of Fort Gibson brought his two sons, Zach and Broc, out for the event. More than 250 runners from ages 3 to 73 signed up early Saturday morning for the 12th Annual Historic Fort Gibson 5K Run on Poplar Street. Sponsored by the Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce, the event included a one-mile fun run and the 5K (about 3.1 miles) run for the more adventurous runners. Award categories included overall male, overall female and first through third of individual age groups for each run. The Peterson family just returned from Santa Cruz, CA where Zach ran in the 6K Wharf to Wharf race with a family member. He finished that race in less than 56 minutes. “Zach came home from school one day and told me he'd broken the fifth grade record for a mile,” said Peterson. “He was in third grade.” This was Zach's fifth year participating in the annual Historic Run and Broc's first. Peterson said he's been running since grade school, and his boys developed their passion for running from him. About 7:30 a.m., the runners for both races lined up behind the starting line. The group stretched half a block. The officials gave the signal, and runners charged off the line. The oldest finisher of the 5K was Bill Snyder, 73, of Tulsa who place first in the 70-99 age group. The youngest finisher was tied between Cole Mabry, 7, for the male group and Grace Crawley, 7, of Fort Gibson for the female division. Chad Hazen and his 7-year-old son, Xan, didn't win any medals in the fun run but did cross the finish line together. “We did this just to get out and do something fun together,” Hazen said. Theirs wasn't the only family looking for something fun to do, one man pushed a stroller and jogged behind his 3-year-old, and an entire family ran together too. The Mabry family from Tahlequah also enjoys running together. Tad, father of three, said his family has done approximately 20 runs of this kind in the past.
