Three of Fort Gibson’s seven sanitary sewer lift stations are in critical need of repair or replacement but the town doesn’t have the money to make permanent repairs, officials said.
The condition of the lift stations, which pump sewage uphill, was brought to the town board of trustees’ attention at its Sept. 22 meeting by employee Robert Railey.
The lift stations on Shady and Pecan streets both are in extremely bad shape and the one on Lee Street needs work as well, Railey said.
The pumps at each of them can be rebuilt and could be used, but new pumps are needed, he said.
Mayor Stephen Hill recommended that once new pumps are bought, the old ones could be rebuilt and kept in stock as spares.
Railey said at one of the lift stations, the electric control panel was placed at ground level and over the years has been damaged with sewer overflows.
The town has $15,000 budgeted for wastewater repairs for this year, but all of that money is not yet available, said Clerk Debbie Daniels.
Replacing the pumps and electric and electric panels at Shady Street is expected to cost about $10,000. It will be the least expensive of all to repair, Railey said.
The town has had no plan for replacing the lift stations or making any repairs, officials said.
This year, the trustees approved repairs to a filter at the water treatment plant, obligating a large portion of available funds, said Town Administrator Kathryn Carson.
The town has some money in savings, but until the cash flow improves, the amount of available funds is slim right now, Daniels said.
The board approved spending up to $10,000 for the Shady Street station and said they would look at making other repairs if funds become available.
