FG student graduates with veterinary degree

Dakota Baker of Fort Gibson was among 90 veterinary students who earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Oklahoma’s only veterinary college at Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences.

He is the son of Wayne and Sheri Baker of Fort Gibson.

Graduates with a degree in veterinary medicine can follow one of a number of career options. Some choose private veterinary practice, others serve in the military as veterinarians in the Army Veterinary Corps or as public health officers in the Air Force, and some pursue the pharmaceutical industry, academia or biomedical research.

“Oklahoma State veterinarians are highly sought after,” said Dr. Jean Sander, dean of the veterinary center. “Our graduates are known for being competent and practice ready. The skills and knowledge they have learned at Oklahoma State allow them to walk into a practice and hit the ‘ground running’ minimizing the new employee learning curve. On average, each graduate has one to two job offers. We’re extremely proud of the class of 2014 and look forward to following their successes.”

Following graduation, Baker will join Northside Animal Hospital in Stilwell.
