CHAMBER NOTES: Excitement growing about upcoming run

— By Gary Perkins

Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce

We are really getting some excitement generated about this year's “all new” Fort Gibson 10K, 5K, and One-Mile Fun Run scheduled for Aug. 24.

This year's event will take on an entirely new course that has been certified and is sanctioned by USA Track and Field.

As always, it is open to all age groups, and medals will be given to the top three finishers in each group, plus trophies for the overall winners for the 10K and 5K runs.

Our run is also being supported as a Cherokee Nation's Wings Race, and is expected to bring upward of 1,000 runners to our area for the early Saturday morning run.

We are listed on Eventbrite and on the Oklahoma Sports & Fitness website.

Also new this year is the way the timing is being handled.  Each runner will have a chip attached to them, which works like a “pike pass” as they cross the start and finish lines, giving them and the event timers an exact reading on their time.

Timing and logistics are being handled by TATUR Racing.

Entry is $20 for individuals, or $15 for each person in a  club, on a team or in groups of six or more. Entry includes a T-shirt and water stations along the courses, with fruit provided by Harps at the finish line.

We are excited about this new run that will give all the runners a real look at our community.

The run will start at the soccer field area northeast of the schools and run through Fort Gibson neighborhoods, along the National Cemetery and Historic Site, and down both Lee and Poplar streets.

We are going to need a lot of volunteers to pull this off, so anyone willing to give us a hand for just a couple hours early Saturday morning Aug. 24, please give me a call.

The race will officially start at 7:30 a.m., and consist of a single loop for both the 10K (6.2 miles) and the 5K (3.1 miles).

The One-Mile Fun Run will leave the starting area and go to an established point one-half mile out, and return to the finish line.

Participation medals will be given to all of the one-mile finishers.

You can register through the chamber or online with Eventbrite at Because of the numbers expected, pre-registration is encouraged.

All race packets will be given out the morning of the run.

Sponsorship letters will also be going out shortly for those businesses that would like to get their names on the back of the T-shirts given to each participant.

For more information, call (918) 577-2069, or online at  Should be a great new run for Fort Gibson. We had a nice turnout to our Weekly Chamber Luncheon this past Thursday at The Courtyard Bistro.

Enjoying a great lunch were Mark Young, Cliff Garrett, Justin Young, Lauren Young with son Westin, Sue Edwards, Lisa Clayton, Kathy Perkins, and myself. Come join us for this very informal weekly get-together at 11:30 a.m. each Thursday, and for the month of July at The Courtyard Bistro. For the month of August, we will be moving our weekly luncheon to Simple Simon's Pizza, beginning Aug. 1.

Also, each Thursday, don't forget to check out the Fort Gibson Farmer's Market at Langston Park. Vendors are usually there between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m., some longer depending on traffic and merchandise. For vendors, there is no fee to set up.
