Space week takes flight at Q.B. Boydstun Library

It’s space week at the library this week. “Oklahomans in Space” traveling trunk from the Oklahoma History Center is on display this week at the “Q.” Hands-on items include an astronaut suit and helmet, flight suit, model rockets and capsules, mission patches, and more.

It also includes DVDs, children’s books, and curriculum guides, courtesy of NASA.

“Many people are surprised to learn that there are eight astronauts from Oklahoma and that our state plays a leading role in the aerospace industry,” said Dan Provo, director of the Oklahoma History Center.

Interactive educational activity is generously sponsored by internationally known Oklahoma singer and entertainer, Darla Z.

• Richard Martin, The Science Dude, from Muskogee will present a program on Astronomy at 10 a.m. today. Gerran Coppin will present “Smart Astronomy” for teens and adults at 6 p.m. today, also.

• Do you know why a frog’s tongue is sticky or a salamander is slimy?

Find the answer at 10 a.m. July 15 when the Oklahoma City Zoo presents, “Sticky, Slimy, Stinky!”

• Fridays are movie days at the library this month.  The same movie will be shown at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

• There’s still time to sign up for the reading part of Fizz, Boom, Read and Spark a Reaction. Drawings for prizes will be held on Aug. 1!

The summer reading program is sponsored by: Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS), Sonic — America's Drive-In Corp., Oklahoman Newspapers in Education, Oklahoma College Savings Plan, The Oklahoma Department of Libraries, and Eastern Oklahoma District Library System.
