Weather perfect for show

What a great fireworks show we had this past Friday evening celebrating the Fourth of July at the high school stadium.

The weather was beyond perfect, as even some of the weather personalities on the local TV channels were saying, “...you might want to take a sweater to the fireworks shows around the area tonight.”

The annual event got started around 9 p.m., however, spectators had begun showing up as early as 8 p.m. to stake out their spot and enjoy the patriotic music being piped through the loud speaker system. The evening’s program started with a welcome from Chamber Director Gary Perkins, followed by an opening prayer by Mark Young.

Following the prayer, everyone stood as the national anthem was beautifully sung by our own Carrigan Bradley, who always does an exceptional job of reminding us why we are all gathered to pay homage to our country, our freedoms, and to all those who do their jobs daily to protect those freedoms.

Shortly thereafter, the first sound of fireworks exploding had everyone’s attention for the duration of the 20 minute display.

Based on the reaction, it was one of the best shows to date, and we thank the efforts of Imperial Fireworks Co., out of Coweta. This year’s finale was spectacular.

In addition to the crowd at the stadium, both in the seats and in the step-area south of the stadium where many had brought their folding chairs or blankets to sit and enjoy the show, you could see many groups of family and friends gathered at the homes surrounding the stadium area. Reports of neighborhood block parties gathered throughout the town to watch the show were also reported.

No one was disappointed as the popping sound of firecrackers and local displays could be seen throughout the area.

I want to give special thanks to the Town of Fort Gibson and Fort Gibson State Bank for their financial support along with that of the chamber to make this annual show possible. Also, thanks to the Fort Gibson Fire Department for being present and on standby to make sure everything went off without any problems.

This is about our 10th year for the show, and our plans are to continue to make it the best “small town” show around. Again, thanks to all those who came out and supported our efforts.

One final reminder, for the month of July our Weekly Chamber Luncheon is being held at 11:30 a.m. each Thursday at Simple Simon’s Pizza on South Lee Street. Come out and join us for this fun, casual get-together.

Thursdays also mark the date for our Fort Gibson Farmers’ Market at Langston Park. Vendors are there primarily between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m., but some get there earlier and spend the day, so check out the area often. This past week, we had a great turnout of vendors. There is no vendor or space fee, so make plans to bring your fruits and vegetables, arts and crafts, specialty delights (homemade pies), plants, or other food stuffs, and set up each Thursday.
