Superintendent announces multiple grants

— There are several very positive topics that need to be announced about our community.

Superintendent of Fort Gibson Schools Derald Glover announced the recipients of five teacher grants:

• The first will be awarded to 120 students in the Early Learning Center kindergarten and is known as the World of Winter Project. The project focuses on basic skills and specific lessons about animals and people that live in the snow and is valued at $977.

• The second, presented to Intermediate Elementary third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students, known as the Soft-Seven Numeric Keypads Grant, focuses on math skills and is valued at $1,000.

• The next grant, known as the Precision in Science Award, will benefit 400 middle school sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade science students, providing them equipment to practice and develop science-related skills.

•   The fourth grant, known as the Multicultural Awareness Grant, was awarded to more than 100 10th-grade high school students to purchase the paperback book “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The book will expose students to a different era of American life and culture and helps them form viewpoints on themes of segregation, social order and human relationships. This grant is valued at $619.

• The final grant is for $985.95. Approximately 50 students will benefit the Baby Think-it-Over infant simulator. Students will real world experience in the responsibilities of child care.

Fort Gibson Education Foundation Chairman Budo Perry said, “The Foundation is happy to present these grants to our school.

“It is our mission to provide an avenue for individuals, organizations, and companies to contribute to the educational advancement of the Fort Gibson School District, in order to provide a world-class education for the children of our community.”

The next great news is regarding the upcoming “True Grit” Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by the Q.B. Boydstun Public Library. The event is  scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 28. All proceeds will go toward the library’s 2014 Summer Reading Program.

Contestants are needed and may pick up an entry form at the library. Chili should be cooked at home with all types of chili being eligible, and there is no entry fee to enter your special meat or meatless chili.

Entries will be limited to 20, so get your entry in now. Prizes will be given to the top three, along with a “People’s Choice” award.

Tasting kits will go on sale for $5 for the public to sample all the great entries. Setup will begin at 5 p.m., judging between 5:30 and 6 p.m., and public tasting from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Our next great event is the Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce’s annual Banquet, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the River Center at Three Forks Harbor & Marina.

We will feature a silent auction, a great dinner, special entertainment, and a guest speaker, followed by “Teachers of the Year” awards. We will also present the Board of Directors and officers for the 2014 chamber year.

Cost is $20 per person, and you can pay at the door. No RSVP is required. Everyone is invited to this “always-fun” annual event, as we review the past year and look forward to the year ahead.

And finally, our weekly Chamber luncheons have been really good for the month of January with a great crowd showing up at 11:30 a.m. each Thursday at the Courtyard Bistro.

This past week found Cheryl Hill, Shelly Holderby, Kathy Perkins, Sue Edwards, Justin Young, Lauren Young, Westin Young, Rhonda Lee, Tim Smith, Tonia Cooper, Denise Bain, and myself in attendance.
