Speaker: Historic site ‘basis for community’

Fort Gibson Historic Site Director David Fowler reinforced the importance of the fort to the audience at the annual Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

“The historic site is the basis for our community,” Fowler said.

Fowler was the guest speaker at the banquet held Thursday at the River Center at Three Forks Harbor. Fort Gibson teachers of the year also were honored at the banquet.

Fowler said the historic site was the “world’s best classroom.”

“We serve 42,000 children,” Fowler said.

A new exhibit has been part of the sites construction and will open inside the visitor’s center.

Fowler said the process of restoring the log fort was “the largest restoration the Oklahoma Historical Society had ever gone into.”

Renovations should be complete in one year, Fowler said.

He called on the Fort Gibson community to continue to remember the site when the renovations were complete.

“We need your support. We need your help.”

Banquet guest Budo Perry said the banquet is a “good opportunity to get together and encourage one another about the advantages of living in our community.”

“It also gives us the opportunity to honor some of our greatest assets, which is our teachers.”

Chamber Director Gary Perkins and Fort Gibson Schools Superintendent Derald Glover presented the teachers of the year with their plaques.

Recipients were Tina Martin, Michele Mackey, Carol Scott, and Dena Longpine.

Scott said she was honored to be selected.

“We have wonderful teachers, so being selected is an honor,” Scott said.

The Fort Gibson school staff works as a team, Scott said.

“The thing that makes it great is that everybody works together, and that’s when kids succeed.”
