Fireworks show set for Thursday at stadium

— It’s time to make sure all your family and friends know about the Fort Gibson Fireworks Show at 9 p.m. Thursday at the high school stadium. It begins with our customary prayer and National Anthem, followed by the fireworks at about 9:15.

Admission is free, and despite the renovation to the football field, the west side of the stadium will be open for families to come and enjoy the show. Of course, the field will be closed, and there will be no parking or sitting on the east side of the bleachers.

Each year our fireworks show gets bigger and better, thanks to our sponsors — the Town of Fort Gibson, Fort Gibson State Bank, along with help from OG&E and Edward Jones Investments-Mark Young. The concession stand will not be open, so families are encouraged to bring drinks and picnic baskets. We ask that everyone clean up after themselves.

The Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce is proud to bring this show to our town each year, and we always appreciate the positive remarks we receive as a result of the free fireworks display. Don’t miss this year’s great event.

Although it’s a bit early, I want all the runners out there to mark Aug. 24 on their calendar. We added a 10K run to our annual run event. The course will change this year. It will start at the soccer fields on the northeast end of the school buildings, go through neighborhoods, and around our historic town before finishing back at the school. We will have a 5K and Mile Fun Run, in conjunction with the new 10K.

The course has been certified and is a USATF sanctioned run, with support from Cherokee Nation’s Wings program. A lot more news about this new run will be coming shortly, but it is important to mark the date on your calendar. It is a week earlier than usual.

We will be soliciting help from many clubs and groups in the community to get the word out to all those neighborhoods that will be affected for a short period on that Saturday morning.

Race start time is 7:30 a.m. so we can beat the heat.

There will be no weekly Chamber luncheon Thursday. Beginning July 11, we will be meeting each week at 11:30 a.m. Thursdays at the Courtyard Bistro for our weekly get-together.

Bring a friend, and come join us.

Don’t forget to check out the weekly Farmer’s Market. It runs from 3 to 7 p.m. each Thursday at Langston Park. There is no booth fee for those wanting to sell their homegrown or homemade goods.
