Sweet times at FFA induction: Ice cream social starts new year for 53-year-old program

New Future Farmers of America members at Fort Gibson High School got a sweet introduction Tuesday.

Returning FFA members and officers hosted the club’s annual ice cream social, welcoming all who are new and celebrating the traditions of the 53-year-old program at Fort Gibson schools.

“We try to show them we aren’t all about sows, cows and plows,” said FFA President Morgan Craig. “We  always have this at the beginning of the school year, and we try to show the freshmen coming in what this is all about.”

The FFA officers for 2013-2014 opened the event, also an FFA meeting, with a special presentation they wrote about the meaning of the traditional blue corduroy jacket with gold lettering.

Craig, Vice President Brooklyn Patrick, Sentinel Jayme Hayes, Secretary Kimber Goodwin and Treasurer Brooke Gohring dimmed the lights, entered the show ring, held up their jackets and described elements of the jackets to the audience of new members, returning members, friends and family.

Fore pointed out the town’s name printed on the lower back.

“It says Fort Gibson, and we are the second largest chapter in northeast Oklahoma,” she said. “Remember when you put on the blue and gold jacket to wear it with pride.”

Joe Osborn, one of two ag teachers at Fort Gibson, said the program is important for many students.

“We are teaching life skills, public speaking, record keeping,” he said. “We’ve grown from last year, putting us roughly at 185-190 students.”

Osborn said most of Fort Gibson’s students don’t have an agricultural background, most even live in town, but all leave with skills they can use.

Many of those students attended the social Tuesday, visiting and chatting, showing their parents around the ag classrooms, shop and show ring, and eating ice cream.
