Our "big run" is only a week away, and hopefully we have covered all the bases. With the help of Justin Young, Mark Young, Tonia Cooper, Denise Bain, Cheryl Hill, Sue Edwards, Kathy Perkins and myself, flyers were passed out to everyone along the race route, which covers more than six miles around and through our town.
Of course, we are talking about the Annual Fort Gibson 10K, 5K, and One-Mile Fun Run, which is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
The starting point is the soccer fields northeast of the school administration building.
The run is expected to bring more than 700 runners.
It will follow a course north on Ross Avenue, east on Poplar Street, with the 5K’ers turning north on Willey Street, and the 10K’ers continuing to Spurlock Estates, then north to Cemetery Road.
All runners will run west on Cemetery Road to Garrison Avenue, where the 5K’ers will cut back to Poplar Street, to Lee Street, then back to the school via South Avenue.
The 10K’ers, will run north on Garrison Avenue to Irving and Ash streets, running around the old fort to Lee Street, then back to the school again via South Avenue.
The one-milers will run to a point down Ross Avenue, east on Poplar Street to a turnaround point, then back to the finish.
We are encouraging home owners to make sure their dogs are well maintained, fenced or put inside, so that the volume of runners will not be hampered or injured in any way.
Obviously, it is for the liability protection of the homeowner, as well.
We are also encouraging home owners to set up water stations in the front of their properties to hydrate the runners as they pass.
A water station consists of a table with paper cups of non-iced water that they can grab and slam down as they pass.

Special thanks to Fort Gibson's finest (police and fire departments), along with volunteers from Cherokee Nation Wings, the Muskogee Run Club, and Direct Traffic Control, for their help in traffic control. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Special Note: For the runners, we will have early packet pick up from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce Office, 108 W. Poplar St.
Regarding the street closures, most streets will be shut down for a very short period of time as the bulk of the runners will pass by but, once they pass by, the street can be reopened.
Slower runners will know to stay off the main roadways. A short portion of Poplar and Ross streets will be the only part of the course that will have runners running in both directions, as the one-milers go to a point and turn back to the start-finish line.
All of that usually takes less than 1/2 an hour. It is expected that the entire race will last about two hours. The finish line and awards will take place in front of the school administration building at the conclusion of the run.

Numbers have been down, as everyone is getting last-minute details for school finished up or taking that last day off before school started on Friday.
Hard to believe that the school year is already back upon us. I was extremely pleased to see such a huge turnout for our weekly Farmer's Market at Langston Park.
The park was pretty-much full of vendors and shoppers. The Weekly Chamber Luncheon is held at 11:30 a.m. every Thursday and for the month of August is at Simple Simon's Pizza.
The weekly Farmer's Market is held from 4 to 6 p.m. every Thursday at Langston Park on Lee Street.
There is no charge for vendors to set up, and setting up earlier or staying a bit later is also not a problem. Two great weekly events to put on your calendar.
