Corn Festival, July 4 fireworks show fast approaching

By Gary Perkins
Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce

—  Fort Gibson has two important events coming up in the next couple weeks.

The first is the 5th Annual Corn Festival, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in downtown. Corn Festival Committee chair Myra Cookson says this year’s fun attractions include a water slide, a blow-up toy specifically for younger kids, a fun photo booth, a rock-climbing wall, and a fun-filled ride called “The Tornado.” The Sweet Corn train will be operating for youngsters, also.

There will be live music and a dance from 6 p.m. until midnight Friday.

Music, live entertainment, and contests — including “corn shucking” and “corn eating” — will go from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Satruday.

Best of all, there will be plenty of that sweet Fort Gibson corn and succotash to be purchased. Both food and merchandise vendors will be on hand to make sure your day is filled will great eats and shopping.

Don’t miss this great family affair in Historic downtown Fort Gibson.

For information, contact Myra Cookson at (918) 351-9943 or Debbie Daniels at Town Hall.

The second event is the fireworks show beginning at dusk July 4 at the high school stadium.

This great fireworks display is sponsored by the Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce, Fort Gibson State Bank, and the Town of Fort Gibson, with additional funding coming from OG&E and Edward Jones Investments-Mark Young. The show is free to the public.

The evening’s events will get started with our customary prayer and singing of the national anthem, usually about 9:15 p.m. The always-spectacular fireworks show will follow. Families are encouraged to bring drinks and water, and picnic baskets. No alcohol beverages, of course.

Surrounding neighborhood block parties and family fireworks watch-gatherings also are encouraged.

Seating in the stadium will be only on the west side, and parking on the east side, around the soccer fields, will be closed.

We ask that everyone please stay off that part of the fields during the fireworks, for safety sake.

Don’t forget to join us for our weekly Chamber luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. For the final Thursday of June, we are at Charlie’s Chicken.

We move to the Courtyard Bistro beginning July 11. There will be no Chamber luncheon July 4.

Come join us for great food and great company. There is no business or social agenda, just friends enjoying lunch together, and everyone is invited — no membership required.

Don’t forget to check out the weekly Farmer’s Market each Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Langston Park.

There is no booth or vendor fee to set up there. Great chance for Fort Gibson farmers, gardeners, cooks, and crafters to sell their wares.
