For this past month, we have been holding our Weekly Chamber Luncheons at Subway here in Fort Gibson.
This past week, we had a great group out for this special weekly function with Mark Young, guest Jeff Rhodes, Justin Young, Rhonda Lee, Lisa Clayton, Carol Milligan, Judy Sadler, Kathy Perkins, Cheryl Hill, Tonia Cooper, Denise Bain, and myself in attendance.
We want to thank Azar Rahmani and her crew for the great food and hospitality for the month of September.
For October, we move our Weekly Chamber Luncheon to Fajita Rita's and enjoy some of the great Mexican delights that Rene and Maria Corral cook up. Come join us at 11:30 each Thursday.
Everyone is invited, and there is never a structured agenda or planned meeting — just good friends getting together in a very casual atmosphere to talk about whatever.
See you at Fajita Rita's this Thursday. We also have announced the official end of our weekly Farmers' Market, held each Thursday at Langston Park.
However, we have also stated that any vendors with late-blooming produce can still come down and sell their wares.
It is also open to arts and crafts through Oct. 24.
I want to thank all those who participated in this year's Farmers' Market, both as vendors and as customers.
We had the best response to date for this weekly endeavor. It will return next year in late spring.
The Smokin' the Fort-BBQ & Bluegrass Festival Committee met this past week, and we are finalizing all plans for this great upcoming event scheduled for Oct. 25 and 26 in downtown Fort Gibson.
Actually, this year's event kicks off on Thursday evening, with our first-ever KCBS certified judging class. Kansas City Barbeque Society teams are known for cooking some of the best barbecue in the world, and it takes a dedicated team of judges to decide which is truly the best of the best.
Being a certified judge means more than just getting to taste some of the best barbecue in the world,
it also represents true dedication and expertise in spreading the message of KCBS and helping to promote America's cuisine.
If you are interested in being part of this, you should plan on attending this certified judging class. It will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 25 at Fort Gibson Town Hall. Cost is $90 if you are not a member of KCBS, or $55 if you are a member. The $90 tuition includes a one-year membership. We already have several attending this class, so get your reservations in soon. You can request a registration form from either firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
Additional plans for this year's event includes the normal activities on Oct. 25, including the "Meet the Cooks" party, Kids Que and Anything Butt cooking competition, music, local vendors, food, and always some surprises. Just being downtown with the aroma of barbecue smoke in the air is worth checking it out. Saturday is the main competition along with taster kits and drinks to sample all the "Taster's Choice" competitive barbecue cooking. Throughout the day will be live bluegrass music featuring the Kenny Cantrell Band, the Meyer Family, and Lonesome Road Bluegrass Band. Also featured will be additional food and merchandise vendors, the judging for KCBS and Taster's Choice winners, official T-shirts and aprons for sale, and a day of just plain fun. Be sure to mark your calendar and come check everything out.
