Chamber Notes by Gary Perkins
Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce
This past week we held our Monthly Chamber Board Meeting with Justin Calvert, Justin Young, Will Crawford, Lisa Clayton, Cheryl Hill, Kathy Perkins and myself in attendance.
As always, the first order of business was to review the financial situation of the chamber and go over the profit and loss report to date.
The chamber is in sound financial shape, and all expenditures are in line with our budget and last year's expenses.
Our membership renewal dues are in line with last year’s as well, with several renewals yet to come.
I was also happy to report that we have picked up six new memberships so far this year, with several others pending.
We then reviewed recent planning meetings that we have had for the October BBQ event and the June Car Show.
We are all excited about plans for these two events — both of which bring thousands of visitors to our community, and thanks to the sponsors of these events, fund most of what we are able to accomplish in the chamber.
One of our big concerns is that, as these two events have grown, we need a separate year-around web site for both of them with continual information, pictures, entry forms and updates to each event — all tied into our regular chamber web site.
Keeping our site exciting, informative and updated is a continual challenge. The need for a constant web site administrator is apparent, and we are in the process of exploring possibilities in that regard.
We also discussed a special meeting planned for next week that will review plans for the addition of a 10K run as part of our regular August 5K and Mile Fun Run.
We have been working with local town officials trying to figure out a course that will cover the necessary 6.2 miles necessary for the run — actually a course that will go 3.1 miles out, then return to the start point.
The course needs to be something that allows us to limit traffic for the couple hours necessary for the runners to cover the distance on a Saturday morning.
Currently, the run is scheduled for Aug. 24. Finding such a course is a bit of a challenge, especially when you add in the parking factor, as it is expected that more than 1,000 runners will more than likely participate. We have gathered support from Cherokee Nation Wings and help from the Muskogee Running Club to make this happen.
Our next Board of Director's meeting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. April 16 at the chamber office.
Speaking of running, I want to remind everyone that the Spring Fling For A Cause, 5K and Mile Run is scheduled for Saturday.
This annual run benefits Special Olympics, and is under the direction of Lisa Walkingstick and Melody Stacey. As always, the run will start just west of the railroad tracks on Poplar Street in downtown Fort Gibson, with a start time of 7:30 a.m.
Entry fee is $20 for non-club participants, and you can sign up the morning of the run if you are there early.
Clubs and running groups will get a discount. Again, this event, which always draws a huge crowd, benefits Special Olympics.
For additional information, contact Lisa Walkingstick at (918) 869-0473 or Melody Stacey at (918) 348-5431.
And finally, our Weekly Chamber Luncheons have been going very well as we get together at 11:30 a.m. each Thursday. For the month of March we are at the Subway on South Lee Street. This past week, we had the following joining us: Lisa Clayton, Kathy Perkins, Rhonda Lee, Tonia Cooper, Denise Bain, Justin Young, Justin Calvert, and myself. Sue Absher Patton, from Cherokee Nation Entertainment, also stopped by to grab a sandwich and say hi, but couldn't stay. Come join us tomorrow.
