OKLAHOMA CITY — Bishop McGuinness proved Hilldale coach Oren Sikes right.

McGuinness blew through the competition during the first 36 holes of play here Monday at the Class 4A state boys golf tournament at Trosper Park Golf Course. Paced by Daniel Stith’s opening-round 3-under-par 67, McGuinness shot team rounds of 288 and 301 for a 589 and a 16-shot advantage over Elk City.

Hilldale, which stood second after one round at 301, is 18 shots back at 607 after a second-round 306.

Stith cooled off with a 73 in the second round but leads the medalist race at even par 140 with Elk City’s Blake Walker, who shot a 68 in the second round after a 72 to start.

“No doubt, they proved what they’re made of,” Sikes said of McGuinness. “They’re very good. I think we’ll be in the mix Tuesday. We’ve got a pretty good chance of catching Elk City. We were five up on them in the first round and I think we got a little gassed the second round and on the other hand, they picked it up.”

Aaron Musick of Elk City (69-72) is third at 141 and then comes the first of five Hilldale golfers. Jordan Perceful shot 72-71 and is in at 143.

Jonas Granel, who was riding a two-tournament victory streak for Hilldale, shot 73-75—148. Other Hilldale scores saw Cory Kirk shoot matching 78s for a 156, followed by Jake Cox (78-82—160) and Kyle Sikes (162).

Sallisaw is right behind Hilldale at 619. Fort Gibson shot 630 as Tanner Owens leads the Tigers at 73-76—149. Following him are Brandon Jackson (78-76—154), Kyle Lashley (81-84—165), Alex Nevitt (83-83—166) and Parker Minor (93-80—173).

Play finishes with 18 holes Tuesday.

HINTON — Oktaha shot 331 and 326 for 657 and is sixth heading into the final round at Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Course.

Washington leads with 611, Fairview is second at 617. Logan Herbst from Fairview is at 137 and leads the medalist race with Oktaha’s Cale Elam (75-76) at 151 and tied for 10th, the final spot on the all-state medal list. Isaac Smith (75-77) is at 152 and a stroke back of his teammate.

Also scoring for Oktaha was Drake Lumpkin (86-81—167), Shane Leach (95-92—187) and Cody Hauser (108-99—207). The tournament finishes with 18 holes Tuesday.
