MHS nets two medals at state track meet

Phoenix Staff Report

ARDMORE — Vernon Scott returned to Muskogee with a medal around his neck from the Class 6A state track and field meet at Ardmore High School on Saturday.

Scott, a junior, finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.03 seconds, giving Muskogee two medalists for the two-day meet.

On Friday, senior Shanell Lyons was sixth in the discus with a throw of 116 feet, 4 inches.

Otherwise, the Roughers and Rougherettes were shut out from making the podium. The top six finishers in each event receive medals.

“We tried hard, that’s all I can say,” said a disappointed coach David Heath said.

For the boys, the 400- ( and 1,600-meter relay quartets finished ninth in the preliminaries with times of 43.03 and 3:25.24, respectively, and didn’t advance to the finals. The 3,200 relay was 15th out of 16 teams (8:39).

Scott and Andre Anderson had times of 52.5 and 53.0 in the 400 in the preliminaries, w hile Shjuan Richardson had a clocking of 11.02 in the 100-dash.

“Andre’s knees were hurting him so much,” Heath said, noting Anderson’s season-long battle with swelling knee joints.

In the field events, Trae Cook cleared 6-2 before going out at 6-4 in the high jump and eight athletes were left when he was eliminated from the competition. Bryson Donaldson went out at 6 feet.

For the Rougherettes, Colby Alexander was eighth in the 400-dash at 1:01.92. The MHS girls finished 10th in the 800 relay (1:47), 12th in the 1,600 relay (4:13). Both teams finished last in the meet in team points. Union won the boys title and Midwest City won the girls title.

Tahlequah’s boys were three spots ahead of Muskogee in the team standings in 22nd. The 400-meter relay was fifth (42.95). Tahlequah’s girls were 19th, four spots ahead of MHS. Jade Riggs took third in the long jump (17-4 3/4)
