Published July 16, 2008 01:33 am - Hilldale’s Cowan to play in Ohio Hilldale High School’s Nick Cowan, a senior this season, will be showing his basketball skills after accepting an invitation to play in the USA Junior National-International Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. The competition starts next Monday and continues through July 27.
Cowan, one of three area players in the festival, received his invitation after his showing at the USA Junior Nationals regional competition at University of Oklahoma in Norman. Cowan helped lead a rejuvenated Hornets team to a 15-13 record and a playoff berth last season, averaging 12.3 points per game while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent at the foul line. He also had 136 assists. Based in Madison, Wisc., the USA Junior Nationals provide one of the top amateur competitions in the United States and offer its programs to all athletes who have a high talent level in basketball and want to develop their skills and techniques through statewide, national and international competitions. Muskogee High School’s Micah Smith and Fort Gibson’s Dewayne Foster have also been selected to participate in the Sports Festival in Ohio.
