Oktaha survives Porter scare

The Porter Lady Pirates gave Oktaha quite a scare in the opening round of the 43rd Bedouin Shrine Classic but a late surge from the Lady Tigers prevented a trip to the consolation bracket, as Oktaha walked away with a 52-43 victory at Muskogee High School on Monday.

“Oh we played rusty, we played very rusty and you could tell,” said Oktaha coach Chester Pittman on his teams performance. “We just didn’t do anything. And I thought Porter played well.”

Shea Lynch had no points for the Lady Tigers (7-0) in the first half as Porter led 18-17, but she hit a basket in the third period that would give Oktaha a lead. Then she would hit three more in the final period to help her team pull away from the Pirates, who fell to 2-5. It was 31-all going to the fourth.

“The girls never really got it going,” said Pittman. “It was like we were playing in cement. We gotta go and get practiced up by Friday. I don’t know, we will see what happens.”

Lynch and Kelsey Cantwell would tie as leading scorers for the Lady Tigers with 15. Jaylie Roper finished with 11.

“We gave up way too many offensive rebounds. The first half Oktaha didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, and Oktaha is too good to miss stuff like that the entire game,” said Porter coach Bill Nobles.

“We tried to limit them to one shot, didn’t do a very good job of that.  It hurt us at the end. But I'm honestly pleased with my girls performance.”

Dominique Garcia led Porter in scoring with 13. Jessica White had 11.

Oktaha will play the Spiro-Hulbert winner at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Civic Center.

Porter will face the loser of Spiro and Hulbert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at MHS.
