Fort Gibson girls open with win, boys second

— FORT GIBSON — With the start of the high school swimming season, two-time defending Class 5A girls state champion Fort Gibson doesn’t look to be slowing down.

The Lady Tigers won three relays and captured three individual first-place finishes to win the team title in the 11-school field with 284 points at the season-opening Fort Gibson Invitational on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the boys, led by Brandon Walker’s two first-place finishes, finished second in 10-team field with 230 points. Harrah won the team title with 249.

Fort Gibson’s girls took first in the 200 medley relay in school-record time of 2:13.91, the 200 freestyle (2:00.33) and 400 freestyle (4:36.41).

Individually, Hali Martin won the 400 freestyle in a school-record time of 5:05.65 and took first in the 200 (2:23.64), while Leslie White took first in the 200 intermediate (2:38.8) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.98) and Kyla Martin finished first (1:07.56) in the 100 freestyle.

“The girls are looking really strong and we don’t have Hannah Cantrell, who has mononucleosis,” Dean said. “When we get her back, we’ll be even stronger. I think she’ll be back next week.”

Elsewhere in the girls division, the Lady Tigers had four second places and two thirds in the individual events.

Walker led the boys showing with his first places in the 50 freestyle (25.52 seconds) and   100 freestyle (57.57).

The Tigers’ boys also had two second places and a third in the team events along with a second and two thirds in the individual events.

Fort Gibson returns to the pool next Thursday to host a meet that will include Bixby, Tulsa Rogers and Sapulpa.
