Area's survivors move on in postseason

— The Wagoner Bulldogs take the next step in their quest to repeat as the Class 4A state champion, while Fort Gibson will look to stand in the way as area teams move on to Friday’s second round of playoff action.

First the Tigers must win at defending Class 3A champion Anadarko. Then, should the Bulldogs take care of business at home against Weatherford, both teams will meet in the semifinals in two weeks.

For Wagoner, Lawrence Evitt ran for a game-high 294 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs topped Sallisaw 41-10 in the opening round of the playoffs. Fort Gibson, meanwhile, got 202 rushing yards and three TDs from Jake Gandara in its 38-20 win against Oologah.

Three area Class 3A teams are left. Hilldale and Stigler are at home against Verdigris and Berryhill, respectively. Keys hits the road to play at Metro Christian.

Hilldale’s Hornets notched their third shutout this season and first in the playoffs in school history by beating Checotah 35-0. Stigler got 252 yards passing and five touchdowns from Cade Shearwood as the Panthers had 628 yards in total offense to beat Jay 55-28.

Keys, led by Cody Cole’s 199 yards rushing, beat Spiro 42-7. Trevor Eubanks ran for 104 yards.

Undefeated Vian flexed its muscle in a 78-8 win against Haskell and plays at home against Kansas in the 2A playoffs this week. Also unbeaten is Warner, as the Eagles ran up 488 yards rushing in hammering Yale 40-6. The Eagles clash with Talihina in the second round in A.
