MHS wrestling takes sixth

Phoenix Staff Reports

— Muskogee’s wrestling team took sixth at the 19-team Perry Tournament on Saturday, getting a pair of runner-up finishes individually. Stillwater won it.

Jacobe Smith, wrestling up a class, lost to Stillwater’s Chandler Rogers 9-6 in a battle of wrestlers who will be Oklahoma State teammates next year.

“The (Rogers) kid, he’s a solid 170-pounder but I think Jacobe gained that man’s respect,” MHS coach John Petty said. “It was a great match. A couple of coaches came up and told us they thought it was the most exciting match of the night.”

Smith scored on an escape and a takedown to take a 3-2 lead in the first period but several flurries of points helped Rogers take command. Smith had to battle through a hand injury that required a timeout for a taping with 1:30 to go.

Corey Andrews also took second. He was pinned in the first period of the finals at 195 pounds.

Dawaylon Barnes was third for Muskogee at 152 and Elijah Petty took eighth at 220.

Petty was impressed with freshman Darius Lewis, who took sixth at 160.

“He could have wrestled at a junior high tournament but here he was at this level and he really stepped up,” Petty said.

Muskogee returns to dual action on Tuesday at Owasso and goes to Sapulpa on Friday.
