Keeping the trophy:Lady Roughers down Enid to repeat as Large School champions

Muskogee coach Doyle Rowland said the theme of his team’s run in the 33rd Bedouin Shrine Classic was accountability.

The final act, however, was Sister Act.

Alexus Wilson’s steal and missed layup was backed up by her sister, Aaliyah Wilson, on a putback to make it 67-66 with 20.2 left. Kelsey McClure then sank a free throw after her subsequent steal and the Lady Roughers, who led by 10 with 6:12 to play but lost the lead with 2:54 to go, grabbed back and snatched their fourth consecutive Shrine large school girls title, 68-66 over Enid at Muskogee Civic Center.

Little sister had big sister’s back. That’s accountability.

“That’s what I’d call it,” the freshman Wilson said. “I have to have it on and off the court.”

The Lady Roughers (8-2) didn’t quite have it sealed, even after McClure’s play with 8.8 seconds on the clock. That’s because Courtney Chelf, the sister of Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf, got her hands on the ball once more.

Fouled on a drive at the top of the circle by McClure with 2.7 seconds left, Chelf, who finished with 26 points, went to the line and officials, after a brief conversation, called the foul a 3-pointer.

The first two bounced off the rim, which forced Chelf to miss the third one. Grace Enmeier grabbed the rebound and missed a short banker as time ran out.

MHS coach Doyle Rowland didn’t see it as a 3-point foul.

“I thought (Chelf) was inside the line and really I didn’t see it as a foul anyway,” he said. “(Chelf) was more aggressive to (McClure) and (McClure) was trying to retreat.”

Then the missed free throws.

“The ball don’t lie,” Rowland said, in a hint of retribution.

Both teams came in ranked in the top 10 of the Okrankings.com Class 6A coaches poll — MHS one spot ahead at 8. McClure led Muskogee with 18 points, Alexus Wilson had 16 and Aaliyah Wilson 11.  Rowland had praise for each.

“Little sister had her back for sure, but Alexus was awesome. She showed the kind of D-1 player  she is,” the coach said. “There were times when we went stale on offense that she went to work. And Kelsey, you can’t say enough about her heart. Her ankle has been bothering her and we’ve held her out of practice all week, but she told me ‘coach, we’re determined to make history with that fourth title tonight.’”

The Pacers (9-2), who saw their seven-game win streak end, were 10-of-19 from the line in the fourth, in which they came in to on the back end of a 13-0 Muskogee run which made it a 49-43 Lady Roughers advantage.

The run stretched to 20-2 on Sydni Carter’s free throw with 6:12 to play. Alexus Wilson had 10 points in that run.

The Lady Roughers opened with a 7-0 run on a 3-pointer by Mari Jackson and regulation 2s by Alexus Wilson and Michal'la Gaulden. Enid answered with a 6-0 run including two baskets by Chelf to draw within one and got its first lead, 18-17, on a free throw by Haven Bay with 36.6 left in the quarter.

The lead changed hands three times in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Jada Ford gave MHS another 7-point cushion at 34-27 before the Pacers closed the half with another 6-0 run to cut it to 34-33 at the break.

McClure and Alexus Wilson both made the all-tournament team and were joined by Chelf, Enmeier and Hilldale’s Hillary Calvert.
