Tahlequah girls basketball coach resigns

TAHLEQUAH – Chad Walker’s tenure as Tahlequah girls basketball coach came to an end Monday when the Tahlequah Public Schools’ board of education accepted his resignation at its monthly meeting.

“It’s been good for me and my family,” Walker said. “I did what I was hired to do, and I’m proud of the effort that the girls gave me.”

When Walker took over, he inherited a program that was in search of a .500 season – let alone a state-tournament berth.

After only six wins his first year in charge, Walker turned in an 11-10 campaign during the 2010-2011 season (his second season at the helm). He followed that up with two 17-win seasons, two area tournament berths and a spot in the state tournament this past season.

The Lady Tigers went 17-10 during the recently concluded 2012-2013 season. Along the way, Tahlequah picked up regional and area titles before losing to Carl Albert in the first round of the state tournament.

“I feel like I’m leaving Tahlequah in a whole lot better shape than the way I found it,” Walker said. “As a coach, you hope you accomplish goals and that’s what we did.”

Walker leaves Tahlequah after going 51-46 in four seasons.

Now Walker will go from one side of the state to the other. He said he intends on taking the girls basketball coaching job at Clinton High School.

“Clinton has asked me to come and do what I did at Tahlequah,” he said “It was kind of hard to turn it down.”

Moving to western Oklahoma will also allow Walker to be closer to his parents.

“It’s only 15 minutes from my parents” Walker said. “This is God putting me in the right position at the right time.”
