OKTAHA 55, VIAN 48 — The Tigers (3-7) took control with a 22-15 second-quarter run and went on to defeat the Wolverines (2-4) at Oktaha on Saturday.

Dustin Leach led the Tigers with 23 points but shared co-high honors with Eric Casey of Vian.

The second-quarter surge put Oktaha up 32-27 at the half.

“We’re really inexperienced this year and we’ve played some good people and haven’t handled their pressure well. But today we made better decisions with the ball,” Oktaha coach Jim Glover said. “We’re not the breakneck speed team we’ve been, so we’re having to learn to make those better decisions. It was one of our better outings.”

EUFAULA 50, KELLYVILLE 33 — Devin Siers had 18 points and Daxton Williams 14 and Colby Marshall 11 for the Ironheads (8-3), who have won six straight.  They blew it open with a 21-12 run over the third quarter to lead 37-26.

Girls basketball

VIAN 77, OKTAHA 34 — Vian (6-0) walloped Oktaha at home, handing the Lady Tigers one of their worst defeats in coach Chester Pittman’s career and perhaps getting the respect they haven’t thus far, ranked 20th in Class 3A.

No. 8 Oktaha was minus its top scorer in Jaylie Roper, out with a knee injury, but it might’ve not mattered. Vian jumped out to a 20-1 first-quarter lead and outscored the Lady Tigers (9-2) by double-digits in each of the first three quarters to lead 63-24 going into the fourth.

“We knew that she wasn’t playing but we came out well, oru pressure was good, and it was a night when a lot of things went right for us,” Vian coach Jordan Garner said. “We know they have a great tradition and Chester’s a Hall of Fame coach, but everything worked for us. We’ve got the kind balance where one of five can lead us on a given night and they share well.”

Erica Casey and Desiree Moon each had 19 points for Vian. Neese Walters had 11.

The Wolverines are home against Keys on Monday and Oktaha is in the Mounds Tournament later in the week.
