Muskogee caps tourneys with victories out west

Muskogee used a third-quarter run to gain control, then held off Bartlesville 70-62 to get third place in the Titan Classic at Midwest City Carl Albert on Saturday.

The Roughers (9-4) led 32-29 at the half but outscored the Bruins (7-7) 20-11 in the third to push the lead to couble-digits, 52-40.

Tramal Ivy had eight of his 19 points in the third off feeds from David Beasley. Anthony King, who scored 16 points and was selected to the all-tournament team, got four points in that quarter and Quintahj Cherry and Roger Lewis each hit key 3-pointers.

Muskogee had to survive Bartlesville’s 3-point shooting — the Bruins had seven 3s on the night.

“Offensively, we did a really good job against their zone,” Muskogee coach Josh Berry said. “Defensively, we did a poor job against them on defending the 3s but credit them too. They shot it well.”

Beasley finished with 10 points.

Muskogee will travel to Union on Tuesday.

MHS 56, Lawton 40

Jada Ford scored a game-high 21 points, Aaliyah Wilson had 19 and also contributed eight blocks and six steals as the Lady Roughers (12-2) won the consolation title  over Lawton (10-7) at the John Nobles Invitational at Moore, winning two straight after spoiling a six-tournament win streak in the first round.

“We’re young and traveling away from home is something that I think shook us in the beginning,” MHS coach Doyle Rowland said. “We showed some improvement through three games but still need to improve our rotation on defense and our chemistry has got to get better.

“Every year at this point people get used to our style of play and we see a lot more zone, so we’ve now got to adjust and improve our execution. Union will come at us that way on Tuesday.”

Lanice Rozell had two points but led the team with eight rebounds. Trena Mims had four assists.

Muskogee led 16-7 after one quarter and never trailed.
