Double blanking by FGHS: Lady Tigers take district with shutout of Keys; boys mercy-rule Hugo

FORT GIBSON – Jordan Raynor’s wanted to get her goal count up. Six shy of her 2013 season title, the door to do that is open plenty wide enough.

The junior forward’s hat trick Friday night helped the Lady Tigers clinched their third consecutive district title with a 3-0 win over Keys at Leo Donahue Tiger Stadium.

It’s the second hat trick she’s had – the other was a four-goal game – and she’s got 16 for the year. That’s six shy of the 22 that helped her win All-Phoenix MVP honors, but with the eyes of the Tigers on a return to the Class 4A championship game, there ought to be enough opportunity over the next few weeks to accomplish that.

Raynor, who had missed from the right wing from about 25 yards out with 12:28 to play in the half, made good on her next shot, taking a whirlaround feed from Brooke Benham across the middle of the field and drilling it in from 15 yards out with 8:53 on the clock.

She more than made up for the first miss on her next goal, beating two Keys defenders playing her heads up for a goal inside the box from about 10 yards out with 4:09 to play.

“I didn’t think I was going to score but I got through that second girl, looked up, took a shot, it went in the net. All luck,” she said.

The third goal came from about 10 yards out with 24:16 showing on the second half clock. FGHS coach Jaime Snyder wouldn’t call any of them luck.

“She impresses me every night,” Snyder said after her team moved to 9-3, 5-0 in 4A-6. “I’ve seen her play three years and every game she’s doing something crazy good. She also turns it to the next level with her speed.

“Not only has she scored some amazing goals but  she creates a lot of attention. So even when she’s not scoring she’s opening up opportunities for others.”

Sanya Januszewski had such an opportunity in the opening minutes. Her shot hit off both the top of the goal and sidepost but didn’t find any net.

“It felt slow offensively early. They were the aggressors. But had that goal and Jordan’s first one found net, it wouldn’t have seemed as much that way,” Snyder said. “But give them credit. They came at us, but when Jordan got on track, we were able to relax a little.”

All three of Raynor’s goals came off assists from Brooke Benham, who like Januszewski are among six seniors recognized on what was also Senior Night.

Keys coach Jack Willis, whose team was outshot 13-3, still has a shot at the postseason from a three-way tie for third place. The Lady Cougars (6-3, 2-3) have the same number of losses as Poteau (4-5, 3-3), which finished on Thursday with a loss to Porter (4-5, 2-3). Keys is one goal up on Poteau and four on Porter in marginal points and both the Cougars and Porter have winless Atoka to finish the season.

“They’ve got kids that have been playing since they were 5, I’ve got kids who have played for three years,” Willis said. “They’ve been at the top of the district and we knew they would be solid all over the field.

“If I had a forward like they have, we’d scored three probably.”

Fort Gibson plays host to Heavener on Tuesday to end the regular season while Keys is off until hosting Atoka next Friday.
