Area golf teams qualify for state trips

Muskogee's in; Fort Gibson, Hilldale, Eufaula win regionals

Muskogee rolled another six and the result is its second state tournament trip in three years.

The Lady Roughers made state with a 356 team total, finishing sixth of 16 schools at Bailey Ranch Golf Course in Owasso on Tuesday. It’s the second trip under coach Kevin Hogue, who led them to the 2012 tournament played at Muskogee Golf and Country Club.

“We were sixth at the (regional) preview and sixth at our conference tournament and all those teams also qualified for next week,” he said. “We’ve been consistent. We had two teams shoot 308 and the winning score on the west side was 340. Our goal is to be in one of the last two groups (to tee off) next week.”

Broken Arrow defeated Union in a tiebreaker, handing the Lady Redskins their first tournament loss in four years. Bixby shot 326 for third, followed by Owasso (329), Jenks (331) and Muskogee.

None of the Lady Roughers were in the top 10 but leading the way was sophomore Hannah Jones with an 82, Sydnie Rosson shot 87, Haley Schuler 92, Brittney Felts 95 and Katie Matthews 95.

4A at Sapulpa

Hilldale sophomore Katie Kirkhart shot 84 at Clary Fields Golf Course to win the tournament, her third this season, as did the defending 4A state champion Lady Hornets with a 374.

Catoosa was second at 411. Wagoner also qualified for state with 426 total, finishing third.

“We can play better but there was some wind and the cold so it wasn’t ideal conditions,” Hilldale coach Oren Sikes said. “Katie’s been consistently 83, 84 and I think with the course we’re on next week she can be in the high 70s. I think we’re pretty close to being ready (to defend at state).”

Kennedi Puckett was third with a 91, putting two Lady Hornets in the top three. Also for Hilldale, Paige Snyder shot 95, Shelby McGlothlin scored a 104 and Zoe Jones a 106.

For Wagoner, Ryann Jacobson was fourth with a 93, Brook Swift (109), Katelynn Collins (110) and Sara Yates (114) rounded out the Lady Bulldog scores.
