Warner ex tabbed for baseball and fastpitch softball

— When the baseball and fastpitch softball positions opened up at Warner High School, Dusty Tidwell saw his chance for his dream job.

Tidwell was approved by the Warner school board on Monday to fill both positions. George Dotson will remain as the slowpitch coach.

“(Tidwell) was teaching here last year and got the itch to coach again and wanted to get back in it,” said Warner athletic director Chris McMullen. “He’s a Warner guy and he’s coached at Beggs and Gore.”

Tidwell’s link to the program goes further back than last year as Tidwell played for the Eagles under current Hilldale football coach Chad Kirkhart his first two years then Pete Barton his senior year in 2000. He came to Warner last year after coaching at Tulsa Edison.

“This is the job I’ve always wanted,” Tidwell said. “This is a job I’ve always dreamed of, ever since I was a little kid.”

Tidwell knows he has shoes to fill, replacing Jason Edwards who is now the baseball and fastpitch softball coach at Sallisaw Central. Tidwell knows one of his priorities is getting familiar with the baseball team.

“I’ve got to go in and earn their respect,” he said. “(Edwards) did great things with the baseball team and I just have to keep building.”

Tidwell also is aware of what he expects of himself and his players.

“Being consistent every day,” he said. “I need to give the kids 100 percent and making sure I’m getting the same thing in return. We have to do the little things right like eliminating mistakes and getting better every day.”
