33RD BEDOUIN SHRINE CLASSIC GIRLS: Hilldale win sets up all-Muskogee semifinal; Oktaha, Enid, Sequoyah also win

— Hilldale’s Hillary Calvert gave her team a “shot” in the arm Tuesday night.

The Lady Hornets hadn’t scored since 2:33 left in the third quarter, missing its last 16 shot attempts. Tulsa Webster clung to a one-point lead at 36-35.

But Calvert’s 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining in the game put her team ahead to stay in a 44-36 victory against the Lady Warriors in the 33rd Bedouin Shrine Classic Large School bracket contest at the Muskogee Civic Center.

“During a timeout, coach (Scott Hensley) told us to grow up and make a shot,” Calvert, who finished with six points, said. “I had to have confidence in my shot and I knew that was going in.

“I think after the shot, everybody got motivated. That’s when the energy clicked in again.”

A lot of energy seems to surround Hilldale these days. The Lady Hornets are now 7-3 for the season. Nobody can recall the last time the Hilldale won a first-round game at the Shrine Tournament.

One thing that is certain is Hilldale has improved. It was a year ago at this tournament when Webster beat the Lady Hornets 57-26 in the opening round.

“We grew up a little tonight. Hillary hit that big shot for us,” Hensley said. “We’ve just scratched the surface at what we can do.”

Hensley’s squad plays Muskogee at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ron Milam Gym in a semifinal contest.

“I know Muskogee has an excellent coach and they’ve got a lot of good girls,” he said. “It’ll be fun. It’s going to be a good time playing them.”

After Calvert’s 3, Hilldale closed the game out at the free-throw line in making six of seven foul shots. Nicole Wright led Hilldale in scoring with 12 points on six-of-eight shooting in the game. She also had a team-high seven rebounds.

“We stuck it out in this one,” she said.

Wright downplayed the matchup with the Lady Roughers. “It’s just another game,” she said. “We’re going to do our best.”

Chasity Asberry topped Webster with 10 points. Jasmine Barnett had 14 rebounds, eight of them in the second half.

Hilldale led 25-24 at halftime and 35-30 after three periods.
