Hilldale struggles on Heartland Classic’s first day

Perry Keith’s Heartland All-Star Classic became a classic wallop for a Hilldale team short on parts.

The Hornets’ summer team, minus four players who expect to start next spring, suffered twin 11-1 losses to Oklahoma Purple and Oklahoma Red in games played at Hornet Field on Friday.

“You don’t learn as much from doing things right as you do from doing things wrong and we did a lot of things wrong,” Hilldale coach Darren Riddle said. “But we did it with a pretty young team against some good older talent.”

Purple, like all the color-named teams a mix of college-potential prospects from high schools across the eastern part of the state ranging from freshman-to-be to 2013 graduates, got a two-run single by Stillwater’s Chance Bunch as part of a three-run first. An RBI single in the second by Chebon Wind of Seminole, who also singled home a run in a two-run fourth and hit a two-run home run in the sixth, helped end the night for Kyle Dick’s on the Hilldale mound, who was replaced by Zack Lanius.

Hilldale’s only run came in the first when Purple pitcher Austin Brownell of Cleveland High hit three Hornets in a row to force in a run after Bailey Puckett had singled.

Red, coached by Stilwell High assistant Doug Merrie, didn’t waste any time getting going in the nightcap. Tristan Pendley of Vinita had an RBI double, Shayne Warren of Kansas a two-run double and L’Donta Howard of Foreman, Ark., an RBI single, all back-to-back. That was all part of a six-run first off Hornets’ starter Derek Altman, who went two innings before being relieved by Cameron Haughey.

Haughey had struck out two in the third and was that close to getting out of a bases-loaded jam when Ryan Collins drilled a two-run single and Chase Monroe of Big Cabin singled in a run in a four-run surge, making it 10-0.

Alden Norton entered in the fourth and Lanius pitched the fifth.

Hilldale’s best shot at making it a game came when Dick’s double in the second helped the Hornets load the bases, but Red starter A.J. Deason struck out Kobe Kuykendall to end the inning.

The Stilwell righty went three innings, allowing two hits. Monroe finished, holding the Hornets scoreless until Cody Walker walked with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Red will enter the remaining part of pool play today at 2-0. In an earlier game Friday it beat Purple, coached by Varnum High coach Kevin Romine, 3-1. Howard singled in a run, Pendley doubled one in and Brock Knoten, also from Vinita, had an RBI sacrifice fly.

In other action, Warner High’s summer team went 1-1 with Black and Orange at Warner High School. Navy was 2-0 at Connors State and White/Black was 2-0 at Okay High.

Gage Sparrow got the win for Warner. Dan Weer, who caught for Vian’s state finalist team this year, had three hits.
