Roughers regain stride: Muskogee dominates Jenks in home dual victory

Muskogee needed a win and it came in overwhelming fashion.

The Roughers, No. 9 in Class 6A, battered the unranked Jenks Trojans 47-24 in a dual meet at Ron Milam Gymnasium on Tuesday. For Muskogee coach John Petty, it was nice to get back on the winning track in dual competition after last week’s loss to Union.

“You want to get back on the mat as soon as possible after a match like that,” said Petty. “We actually wrestled much better in the tournament action over the weekend so I think we got our heads back into it.”

The night started with a 12-5 decision by Xavion Taylor at 128 to get the Roughers (5-2) rolling, Next up, his brother Xavier recorded a pin with eight seconds left in his match at 134 and then a forfeit at 140 put the Roughers up 15-0.

The 147-pound match was the closest of the evening as Muskogee’s Micah Foster lost a tough match to Jake Pattinson 6-4. With Pattinson leading 4-2 going into the third period, Foster got an escape to close the match to 4-3, but Pattinson shot in for a take down with 50 seconds left to ice the victory despite a late escape by Foster.

The highlight of the night saw 2013 state qualifier Dawaylon Barnes score a 6-1 decision over 2012 state champ Austin Eades.

And although he didn’t wrestle, another Muskogee state qualifier, Jacobe Smith, drew praise from his coach as he received a forfeit after Jenks elected to move his scheduled opponent up a weight rather than wrestle Smith.

“Jacobe’s reputation precedes him,” said Petty. “Match after match they keep running from him, but I keep telling him that come tournament time, they won’t be able to run.”

Buckhanan got a technical fall, 21-5 over Drew Hinkle at 172 pounds.

In addition to the pin by Xavier Taylor, the Roughers also got pins from Kyle Gatzman at 184 and Lantz Woodburn at 108. For Woodburn, it was just a matter of stepping up in the last period.

“I was up 4-0 starting the last period and I started in the top position,” said Woodburn. “The guy escaped so I knew I had to be aggressive and once I got him down and on his back, I knew I could pin him.”

Besides Smith’s match at 162, the Roughers also received a forfeit at 222 while giving up a forfeit at 197.

Other than Pattinson’s win at 147, Jenks’ (1-3) only other mat victories came at 115 where Grant Fox decisioned Davonta Miller 3-0, and at 287, where Marquis Overton, with a 50 pound weight advantage, pinned Adonis Cole with 1:20 left in their match.

Muskogee returns to action a week from Thursday when they host No. 10 Bixby.
