Lady Hornets prep for postseason with win

The Hilldale Lady Hornets needed a game in which they played well on both ends of the court heading into the postseason.

On Monday, Hilldale coach Scott Hensley got what he was looking for as the Lady Hornets beat Okmulgee 72-51 at the Hilldale Event Center.

“We shot the ball well,” Hensley said. We also turned them over quite a bit. I’d like to see us do a little bit better job of rebounding, but overall we played pretty well.”

Hilldale (14-6) took command of the game early, racing out to a 51-20 advantage at halftime. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, all the starters had seen their last action of the night.

Katie Kirkhart led Hilldale with 16 points while McKensie Plant finished the game with 12 points.

“All of Katie’s points came in the first half,” Hensley said. “Everyone scored except for one person on the team. This was good going into the playoffs.”

The Lady Hornets don’t take the floor again until 6:30 p.m. Friday when they host Roland for the Class 4A, Area IV District 8 district championship.

Hilldale watched as the Okmulgee Bulldogs tied the score at the end of the fourth quarter, then went on to win the game in overtime.

The Hornets led the game by one point with 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and Bradley Campbell on the free-throw line. Campbell made the first attempt but missed the second, allowing the Bulldogs to race down the court to make a layup to send the game into overtime.

“Offensively, we shot the ball very well,” said Hilldale coach Jeremy Rogers. “We were 23 of 27 from the free-throw line and that’s about as good as you can do. We scored 75 points; we just have to do better. We had trouble keeping them out of the paint and we have to do better.”

Bill Muse led the Hornets (8-12) with 20 points while Campbell finished with 17 points and Dakota Holmes had 10 points.

The Hornets are off until 8 p.m. Friday, when they will meet Roland in the Class 4A, Area IV District 8 championship game.

Rogers said Monday’s game was a good tune-up for Roland.

“This was a really good prep game for Roland,” Rogers said. “They’re really athletic and faster than us so this was a good game to get us ready.”
