Former THS boys coach headed east

TAHLEQUAH – Mike Leafgreen is no longer a head basketball coach. But he couldn’t be any happier about his new landing spot.

The recently-released Tahlequah boys basketball coach was recently named as an assistant hoops coach at Rogers High School in Arkansas.

Leafgreen announced his new gig on Twitter on Friday.

He tweeted: “Excited to announce that we’ll be moving to Rogers AR! Feel really blessed, and know that this is the perfect spot for my family!”

Leafgreen’s two-year tenure at Tahlequah came to an end in late March, not long after he completed a 8-16 season during the 2012-2013 campaign. The former Del City assistant coach went 22-24 while coaching the Tigers.

Leafgreen confirmed the news of his new job to the Tahlequah Daily Press.

“We had a few options to think about for next year, and just was drawn to Rogers,” Leafgreen said. “I’m excited to get over there and hit the ground running.”

In northwest Arkansas, Leafgreen joins a boys basketball program that went 12-17 last season. The Mounties were eliminated from postseason play by West Memphis.

“I’ve talked to a lot of coaches in conference schools and haven’t heard one negative thing yet,” Leafgreen said of the Rogers job. “Rogers has a rich tradition across the board in athletics, this year had the state champs in (cross country), and tennis and was in the state tournament for basketball.

“And Tahlequah football can tell you first-hand what (Rogers’) football team is like.”

The Mounties defeated the Tigers 45-13 in Week 2 of last year’s football season. The two schools are slated to meet again this September during Tahlequah’s non-district portion of its schedule.

While moving across state lines, Leafgreen said he and his wife will keep in touch with friends and former players in Tahlequah.

“We have a few really good friends here — and along with our players — we will miss,” Leafgreen said. “We will definitely keep up with Tiger basketball.”
