Big win for Roughers

MHS downs 6A No. 5 Bishop Kelley for district win

Terrific goal keeping and big legs producing big goals helped the Muskogee Roughers survive a scare and down Class 6A No. 5  Bishop Kelley, 3-2, on Muscogee (Creek) Nation Field at Indian Bowl on Tuesday.

Muskogee (2-1, 1-0) who started district play with a victory, got off to a 1-0 lead when Ernesto Martinez sent a pass across field that deflected off of a Comet and landed right in front of Jose Hernandez, who put it in the net 10 minutes into the game. Bishop Kelley responded with a goal from a penalty kick that tied the game up with 11 minutes until intermission.

The Roughers broke the tie eight minutes later when David Espinosa broke into the open and won a one-on-one battle with the goalie putting the ball into the back of the net, giving the Roughers a 2-1 lead at the break. Goalkeeper Jose Villeda had seven saves in the first half.

Muskogee extended its lead when Martinez scored seven minutes into the second half for a 3-1 lead.

A questionable offsides call wiped out another MHS goal and the Comets (3-2, 0-1) would answer on a goal from 40 yards out.

Muskogee coach Shawn Riley wasn’t happy with his team’s composure in that swing.

"We have to do a better job of keeping composure in that moment, rather than going back into old ways," said coach Riley. "We are trying to change the environment and history of this program. We have to play better when calls don’t go our way."

Villeda knew his coaches wishes and helped keeping his team together with huge saves with the Comets feet in front of his goal to help them walk out with the win. He had 16  saves.

"When they scored I knew I had to keep my head straight and also keep everyone else calm and keep ourselves together to get the win," he said.

Riley tried to put the game into perspective.

"We have a long season ahead of us. We are going to face a lot of high-level teams," said Riley. "This doesn’t mean anything for us long term. We are now just looking towards Booker T Washington. This win is only a small step."
