Prep basketball roundup: Sequoyah sweeps

Boys

SEQUOYAH 87, HENRYETTA 69 — 3A No. 9 Sequoyah (15-6) knocked off No. 6 Henryetta in a battle of top 10 squads at Henryetta on Thursday.

Four kids scored in double figures for the Indians, winners of seven of their last eight — Ryan Helsley and B.J. Leach each had 21 and Caisen Green had 15 Quinton Johnson 11.  Green and Leach had three 3-pointers each of a team total of nine.

Sequoyah led 29-17 after one quarter. Both teams split a 56-point third quarter.

Chet Caywood had a game-high 26 points for Henryetta (18-4), which had an eight-game win streak halted. Sequoyah goes against No. 4 Verdigris, which beat the Indians in the Inola Tournament finals, in the first game of a boy-girl doubleheader tonight.

Girls

SEQUOYAH 60, HENRYETTA 56 —  Sequoyah (15-6) almost squandered a 16-point lead as the Lady Knights stormed back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Indians 25-13. Henryetta had a similar rally against Oktaha on Tuesday but fell short.

Part of the Lady Indians’ problems came from turnovers. They gave up six through three quarters and committed 10 in the final eight minutes, but they held a 17-4 edge on the defensive boards. Courtney Jones led Sequoyah with 22 points, followed by Audrey Ballou with 15 and Loren Young 11. Makayla Blackbear led Henryetta with 16.
