Pair of seconds for Tahlequah runners in state cross country

— It was twos for Tahlequah at the  OSSAA Class 5A state cross country championships held at Edmond Santa Fe High School on Saturday as both the Tigers and Lady Tigers turned in runner-up finishes behind Edmond Deer Creek.

Among Tahlequah’s boys, Zechariah VanFleet was third in 16 minutes, 22 seconds on the 5K course, behind state champion Bryce Balenseifen of Deer Creek (15:47.96).

Mohamed Bassime was 15th (17:03), Aaron Eversole 25th (17:30.33), Braxton Hood 29th (17:36.96) and Seth Martin 32nd (17:44.90). Deer Creek, which had six runners in the top 16, ran away with the title with 36 points to Tahlequah’s 94. Coweta was third at 127.

On the girls side, Deer Creek Edmond edged Tahlequah in the team hunt, totaling 49 points to the second-place Lady Tigers’ 67.  Amy Hembree and Gracie Medillin were third and fourth, respectively, with times if 12:30.19 and 12:32.05 on the 3200-meter course.

Lindsey Chaffin (13:13:32) was 19th individually, Madison Reed 29th (13:22.99) and Alejandra Medelin 31st (13:23.79). Michael Werner of Grove was first in 11:48.83. Collinsville was third in the team standings with 122.



Class 4A

Fort Gibson’s Coleman Crawley took 17th among a 111-runner field with a time of 17:36.77. Oologah’s Tristan OWens ran a 16:20.73 for first place. Edmond Santa Fe was team champion. No area team qualified on either the boys or girls side. Also running as an individual, Cheynne Cowett accompanied Crawley for FGHS and took 53rd (13;54.22).among 112 runners.Zoie DeFehr of Weatherford was individual champion in 12:04.50. Plainview was team champion.



Class 6A

Muskogee had no qualifiers. Ben Barrett of Norman North ran 15:30.76 to win individual honors and Jenks, with five runners in the top seven, took the team title.  Norman North won the girls title and Cheyenne Walden of Sand Springs won in 11:19.50.
