Phoenix Staff Reports
A look at the playoff picture as the final Friday of prep football’s regular season descends upon us:
In are Wagoner, Fort Gibson, Checotah, Stigler, Vian, Warner. Still battling are Muskogee, Eufaula, Gore, Haskell, Webbers Falls.
The details are as follows:
Muskogee: Roughers (2-7, 2-4 6A-2) must defeat No. 6 Bixby at home and have Tulsa Edison upset Sapulpa to finish fourth in District 6A-2. 6A-1 champion Union awaits.
Wagoner: Has clinched 4A-3 and will play the fourth-place team from 4A-4, most likely Fort Gibson or Sallisaw.
Fort Gibson: The most likely scenario involves third place in 4A-4. A win against Sallisaw (7-2, 5-1) and the Tigers (6-3, 4-2) will end up there with a head-to-head advantage against the Black Diamonds. But, a loss by either Cascia Hall (8-1, 5-1) or Poteau (8-1, 5-1) could force a three-way tie for second. A loss by both would make a four-way tie. That’s not as likely considering Cascia finishes against Broken Bow and Poteau gets Rogers, both well out of the picture.
Hilldale: Has clinched second place in 3A-7 and will play the third-place team in 3A-8, either Stigler, Spiro or Checotah.
3A-8 (Checotah, Stigler, Eufaula): If Spiro (8-1, 6-0) defeats Checotah (8-1, 5-1) at Checotah on Friday, it wins the district and Checotah would travel to Hilldale in the first round. If Checotah wins and Stigler (7-2, 5-1) defeats one-win Idabel, it comes down to a three-way points tiebreaker. Checotah has 68 points, Spiro 66 and Stigler 64. If Stigler wins by the maximum credit of 15 points, then Checotah would have to win by 12 or more. None will finish worse than third.
Eufaula (3-6, 2-4) can make it with a win against Heavener and a Valliant win over Roland. All three teams are at 2-4 in league. If Roland and Eufaula win, Roland gets fourth by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Gore: The Pirates (2-7, 2-3) are in a tie for fourth in District A-6 with Quinton (4-4, 2-3), which defeated Canadian (1-7, 1-5) and has Haileyville (0-9, 0-5) remaining and owns the head-to-head edge against Gore by virtue of an earlier win. The Pirates face unbeaten Talihina and would need a win there and a Quinton loss to finish fourth. A-5 champ Wynnewood awaits the survivor.
Haskell: Plays Mounds at home and the winner will clinch fourth place and a date at Vian in the first round.
Vian: Has clinched 2A-6 and will play the Haskell-Mounds winner at home in the first round.
Warner: Will finish third in District A-8 and play at the runner-up in A-7 in the first round, which will be the loser of this week’s A-7 title game between Morrison and Keifer.
This is as it would appear in print Steve...
Webbers Falls (4-4, 3-3 C-4): Bring in a math guru. This one has all kinds of scenarios and could result in a five-way tie for second. Webbers could lose and get in if Sasakwa (6-3, 4-2) beats Maud (5-4, 3-3) by two or more points and Southwest Covenant (5-4, 3-3) loses by one or more than Webbers loses to Arkoma (5-3, 4-2).
If Webbers, Southwest Covenant and Maud all win, the five-way tie exists and Webbers would need to have two of these three point differentials: plus-2 over Maud, plus-3 over Southwest Covenant or plus 21 over Sasakwa. The only three-way tiebreaker Webbers loses on head to head is if it wins along with Southwest Covenant and Sasakwa. The Warriors lost to both.
