Home girls convincing: Hilldale makes quick work of Wagoner

To say the Hilldale Lady Hornets were wearing their hitting shoes on Tuesday against Wagoner would be an understatement.

The Lady Hornets, 7-1 on the season and the No. 2 team in the Class 4A OSSAA rankings, pounded out 13 hits in their three innings of at bats in run-ruling the Lady Bulldogs 12-0 at Hilldale's diamond.

“We have nine girls up there hitting and I don't think one of them is an automatic out,” said Hillary Calvert.

The hits started with Calvert, who went 3-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run. She led off the game with a sharp grounder that Wagoner (6-3) third baseman Mallory Smith could not handle. Casady Mills followed that with a double into right centerfield, allowing Calvert to come around to score and putting the Lady Hornets up 1-0.

“To be leadoff for me, it's real important to get on,” Calvert said. “I get on and Casady moves me over and I have faith that Destiny (Riddle) will score me.”

While Riddle — who tossed her fourth shutout of the season in the circle — didn't plate Calvert, she did bring home Mills with a single to left and putting the Lady Hornets up 2-0.

The second inning started almost like the first inning, but in reverse order. Toni McMillan, who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, led off with a double to left and came home on Kyla Ibarra's single to give Hilldale a 3-0 lead. After Ibarra moved over to third on a wild pitch, Kenzie Mize sent a fly ball to center, allowing Ibarra to tag up and score Hilldale's second run of the inning and giving the Lady Hornets a 4-0 advantage.

In the other dugout, Wagoner coach Emily Williams was not pleased with her team's performance.

“It was batting practice for them,” she said. “These girls are way too good of hitters. They had hit, after hit after hit. We know they're a good team and we didn't show up to play.”

Meanwhile, Riddle, who improved to 5-1 on the season, was keeping Wagoner off the board. She faced the minimum nine batters and allowing only a sharp single between shortstop and third to Cherokee Ridge with one out in the first inning. Riddle got Madyson Robertson to hit a line drive back to her, which doubled off Ridge, and was never threatened again, striking out four of the final six batters she faced.

“I struggled a little bit with my different pitches, other than my fastball,” Riddle said. “But I settled in when we needed it.”

When McKensie Plant led off the third with a single to left, it started a string of seven straight batters getting a hit, with Mills ending the streak when she was hit by a pitch. When Riddle flied out to center for the first out of the inning one batter later, Hilldale had scored six runs and was two runs shy of ending the game.

It did when McMillan drove home Mills with the eighth run of the inning.

“I have been struggling at the plate these first games,” McMillan said. “I am really relieved to get hits this game. Actually, so is everybody else that got good hits.”
