Lady Roughers let one get away versus BA

Muskogee coach John Hammer is tiring of the moral victories.

Such went the 3-2 loss at Broken Arrow in another tough Class 6A volleyball loss. The Lady Roughers spotted BA a two-set lead (20-25, 19-25) then rallied with two wins (25-21, 25-14) only to lose the fifth set, 14-16.

“They don’t feel good,” he said. “I mean, I don’t have a problem losing to good teams if we play the way we’re capable. We’re a young team that is searching to finish matches.

“I can’t fault the effort. You could see the hurt and pain in their faces that we lost. We’re just got to kick that door in.”

Muskogee came in ranked 13th. Broken Arrow was not ranked.

MHS was down 15-12 and rallied from that point in the third set to prevent a sweep, then rode the surge of momentum to a lopsided win in the fourth set.

Then, trailing 9-2 in set five, Muskogee rallied to lead 14-12 before being whistled for a net violation. Four straight BA points followed.

“We didn’t really pass the ball well all night. Our serve-receive was good and the defense picked up and was active on the floor and our offense started to come together,” Hammer said. “Then we had some mental mistakes against a big boy and didn’t finish. It’s tough.”

Claire Farmer had 20 kills and Jensen Martin had 38 assists. Leigh Westbrook had “the best match of her career” according to Hammer, with nine blocks and 11 kills.

Muskogee fell to 7-4 and returns to action next Tuesday against sixth-ranked Owasso.
