Roughers make a lot of a little in win

Muskogee managed just six hits but got plenty of run production out of the lineup in what became a 6-2 win Monday at Sand Springs.

The Roughers (2-1) fell behind 2-0 in the second before starting to chip away. They scored first when Tony Horn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth. In the fifth, Harris Jones’ sacrifice  fly plated Keyshawn Ballard, who reached on an error.

Ballard had a two-run triple in the sixth to put MHS up for good, but the sophomore was called out for missing first.

Still, Dakota Morse made it hold up. Morse threw 4 2/3 relief innings behind starter Cody Floyd, who gave up both Sandite runs. Morse allowed just two hits and struck out one.

“Early on, we were a little flat. They got that one big hit (single) in third when they went up two. But we picked up intensity and focus and scored some runs,” MHS coach Jeremy Griffin said.

In the seventh, it wa s Morse who laid down a bunt after Bryson Bell was hit by a pitch and Austin Jones singled. An errant throw on the bunt plated both Bell and Jones.

Both teams play at MHS today. Game time is 5 p.m.
